'Matchbox': Sam Hargrave To Direct Film Based On Toy Car Brand

After two “Extraction” films, both hits for Netflix, it’s clear that Sam Hargrave is one of the best action filmmakers working today. So, even though the idea of a “Matchbox” film seems silly, you have to give it the benefit of the doubt with Hargrave attached.

That’s right, according to Deadline, Sam Hargrave has been hired by Mattel and Skydance to direct a “Matchbox” film based on the collectible car brand. The film is set to be written by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper, but there are no plot details that are available now. However, when you consider Hargrave is attached, you have to assume this is going to be some sort of high-octane thriller, right? Perhaps this is Mattel’s version of “Fast & Furious.”

The “Matchbox” film is the latest toy brand to land its own movie in the wake of the massive success of “Barbie.” Of course, there’s really no direct correlation between the car toys and dolls. And with Hargrave attached, you’re not really expecting some sort of commentary on the way kids play with cars, either.

After the massive success of the two “Extraction” films, Hargrave is one of the most sought-after filmmakers working today. He has a number of projects in the works, such as the TV series, “The Last Frontier,” as well as a holiday action film, “Stay Frosty.” He’s also been mentioned for projects such as “Prophet” and “Combat Control.” Needless to say, he has options for what to work on.

“Matchbox” doesn’t have a release date yet.
