'Riddick: Furya': Vin Diesel's Next Entry In His Sci-Fi Franchise Begins Production In August

There have to be fans of Vin Diesel’sRiddick’ franchise out there, right? Surely they’re a growing fandom considering today’s news that the fourth (yes, there have been three already) ‘Riddick’ film has confirmed production will begin in August.

According to the company Rocket Science, “Riddick: Furya” is set to begin production in August, ensuring we will get a fourth film in the franchise. The film, as the title suggests, finds our anti-hero, Riddick, going back to his home planet where he will fight alongside other Furyans against a new monster. And yes, filmmaker David Twohy is returning to write and direct the new adventure.

‘Furya’ will begin production more than a decade after the release of the third film in the franchise, simply titled “Riddick.” That 2013 film made just over $98 million worldwide (with a budget reportedly at $38 million). This is a franchise that is clearly very near and dear to the heart of Diesel, as he is a fan of sci-fi and has wanted to make his own space opera-style epic film series. But honestly, with a previous film that didn’t make more than $100 million and was released almost 11 years ago, who is this exactly for?

Does a lack of perceived interest in the franchise mean ‘Furya’ will be a bad movie? Of course not. In fact, the time away from the franchise might be a good thing, as it offers a chance for a fresh generation to take a trip to Diesel’s version of space.

A release date has yet to be announced, but if the film is only beginning production in August, you have to assume it won’t be released until the second half of 2025.
