The unofficial start to Summer Box Office season kicked off with a massive action film, “The Fall Guy,” this past weekend. Unfortunately, the beginning of summer is more of a whimper than a bang, as “The Fall Guy” opened with an estimated $28.5 million over the three-day weekend. That’s not a huge number for a film that is said to have a production cost between $130 million and $150 million. Obviously, the film can’t be called a bomb yet–it could still have amazing legs and turn into a sleeper hit. As of now, things don’t bode well for the future of the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt feature. But what if, even with the low box office, I told you that a sequel is already written?

According to Ryan Gosling, in an interview with FastCompany, not only is the actor ready to expand the ‘Fall Guy’ franchise, but the sequel is already written. For those who don’t know, “The Fall Guy,” directed by stuntman-turned-filmmaker David Leitch, tells the story of a film stuntman who is asked to go on a mission to find the missing lead to a big-budget action film he is working on. Hijinks and explosions ensue. And Gosling is so pleased with the result, he’s ready to jump into a sequel.
“We already—I mean, we love these characters so much that we wanted to know, just for ourselves, what happens to Colt and [Emily Blunt’s character] Jody after the movie ends?” said Gosling. “What’s the next phase for them? And we know exactly what it is. So hopefully the audience wants to know, too.”
He added, “The sequel sort of wrote itself. We already know [the story] intimately. We’re just hoping that people like this movie enough that we get to keep telling the story of these characters. We love them so much, and we love this world, and I feel confident that we can do it.”
As Gosling alludes to, his desire to jump right into a sequel isn’t guaranteed to happen. The audience, aka box office, will decide whether or not we see another ‘Fall Guy’ film. There are some signs that the film could stick it out and earn a pretty penny at theaters. The film currently has a 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it earned an A- CinemaScore, which shows audiences really enjoyed themselves this weekend.
Of course, we’ve seen plenty of critical darlings and audience favorites that don’t earn enough box office to warrant a franchise. Honestly, with a $130 million production cost, the film would likely have to earn more than $400 million to really get talk of a sequel. So, we’ll just have to wait and see.
