Steven Knight Says The ‘Peaky Blinders’ Film Is “Ending This Chapter” With Much “Bigger” Budget

After six dramatic seasons the Irish gang series “Peaky Blinders” came to a close in 2022. Something of a sleeper hit at first, the series seemed to take off during the pandemic when it was on Netflix. Its popularity was arguably at a zenith right as it ended, so series creator Steven Knight envisioned a feature film to top it all off in a big send-off. Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy, who plays Tommy Shelby in the upcoming “Peaky Blinders” film as well as the television series, is locked to play the part again. In a recent interview, Knight revealed the shooting time frame and teased some details.

In an interview with NME, Knight promised a September start date for the beginning of production, a bigger budget, and a final end to this chapter.

“It’s gonna happen this September,” Knight said of its production start date. “I’m just doing the final [script] polishes, which will continue up until the day before we start shooting. But we’re there. We’ve got everything sorted, we’ve got all the commitments we need, we are ready to go. I think the film is gonna be a step up again, and it’s gonna be great that ‘Peaky’ fans can meet in one place and watch it. The budget will be bigger, but also, because we know we’re ending this chapter, we’re all going to try to do our best. Cillian [Murphy] is really up for it. So I can’t wait for it to start shooting.”

For his performance in Christopher Nolan’sOppenheimer,” Murphy most recently took home an Oscar. However, according to Knight, the actor has made it quite evident that “Peaky Blinders” is still on his mind, stating that after every award he won, he would text him about his excitement for the project.

“Isn’t it amazing? I’m so pleased for him because he deserves it,” Knight said about Cillian’s Oscar win. “After every award that he won, he would text and say, ‘I really can’t wait to be doing Peaky.’”

Although the plot of the “Peaky Blinders” film has not yet been revealed, it most likely picks up after the thrilling conclusion of season six. Tommy rode away from his old life at the show’s end, leaving people close to him to believe he had passed. While it’s an interesting spot to continue up where the gangster left off, Knight claims they have a game-changing notion that would make viewers “shocked, delighted, and horrified.”
