10 TV Shows To Watch In January: ‘True Detective,’ ‘Master Of The Air,’ ‘Expats’ & More

January is always an interesting month for television releases. It’s easy to miss some definite highlights as we continue to catch up on the spillover of the best of the previous year. This January is even stranger due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which both delayed the return of a particular series and also resulted in what should’ve been last year’s Emmys now taking place this month. Still, plenty of worthwhile titles are making their (often) streaming debut this month.

From Michelle Yeoh applying her star power to a Netflix series to Seth MacFarlane returning to the “Ted” franchise in sitcom form to the latest from acclaimed filmmaker Lulu Wang, there’s plenty of television to fill the winter days with.

The Brothers Sun
Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh stars in the latest Netflix series, “The Brothers Sun.” Created by Brad Falchuck and Byron Wu, the series tracks the fallout after the head of a Taiwanese triad is shot by an assassin. The eldest son, Charles’ Chairleg’ Sun, must then travel to L.A. to protect his mother and brother. Justin Chien and Sam Song Li star alongside Yeoh (read our review here).
Premiere Date: Season 1 premieres January 4 on Netflix.

Echo
Marvel kicks off 2024 with its first new series of the year, “Echo.” First introduced in “Hawkeye,” “Echo” follows Maya Lopez, whose actions in New York City have caught up with her as she deals with her past and reconnects with her Native American roots. Created by Marion Dayre, the series stars Alaqua Cox, with Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, Cody Lightning, Graham Greene, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Charlie Cox all making appearances.
Premiere Date: Season 1 premieres January 9 on Disney+.

Criminal Record
Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo star in the British crime series “Criminal Record” for Apple TV+. The series follows two brilliant detectives brought together due to an anonymous phone call, which draws them to an old murder case. Created by Paul Rutman, the series stars Dionne Brown, Stephen Campbell Moore, Charlie Creed-Miles, and more.
Premiere Date: Season 1 premieres January 10 on Apple TV+.
